No vacancy, "we are full", no rooms available; that seemed to be the motto of the evening. After a fun, eventful day of travel that included a change of plans and the start of Route 66 a day early; we were turned away at the first three motels we tried and we told the only room available at the Super 8 in Pontiac was a smoking room. We finally found a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Pontiac - a very nice, non-smoking room!
As my first day on Route 66 draws to an end, I am tired. I did not want to go to bed however without blogging. We woke up early in Cave City, had breakfast at the El Patron, and started towards Chicago. We made such good time that we decided to find the "Begin Route 66" sign at the corner of Adams and Lake Shore and do just that - begin our Mother Road Adventures.
Navigating downtown Chicago was much easier than anticipated despite a detour. It was not long before the Windy City was behind us and the journey of a lifetime was in front of us. Lunch, much to our pleasant surprise, was at the Launching Pad. We had heard it was closed, but found out it was just for the winter. After pictures and a burger, it was back on the road.
Next stop; The Polka-Dot Drive In in Braidwood. A photo op with Betty Boop, James Dean, Elvis, and a few other celebrities and a cherry slushie and it was back on the road towards Gardner, Dwight, and finally Pontiac and a room for the night. Who knows what tomorrow will bring other than more fun, more adventures, and more Americana.
